LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Thomas Albert and State Rep. Steve Frisbie this week introduced legislation to honor U.S. military members killed during their service to the nation.
The legislation would designate the Honor and Remember flag as the official symbol of Michigan’s commitment to honor the service and sacrifice of U.S. Armed Forces members who have given their lives in the line of duty. The flag may be flown on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day or any other day when the military or a military member is honored.
Several states already have approved measures adopting the flag, and a nationwide proposal is pending in Congress.
“As we prepare to commemorate Veterans Day, it’s important to explore ways to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom and our nation,” said Albert, R-Lowell, a Marine Corps veteran. “We should formally recognize their courage and sacrifice and communicate our unwavering gratitude to their families.”
Albert introduced Senate Bill 703, while Frisbie, R-Battle Creek, introduced House Bill 5283.
“Thousands of brave men and women have died in service to protect the revolutionary idea of liberty,” Frisbie said. “It’s an honor to work with Sen. Albert on showing that the state of Michigan will never forget the soldiers who cannot come back home to their loved ones.”
The bills would designate the flag made by Honor and Remember Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring the sacrifice of America’s fallen military service members and their families.
